Michelangelo worked on the tomb for 40 years without finishing it because he had to stop many times for other projects like the ceiling of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo went to help Florence during the siege he worked on the city's fortifications. The city fell in 1530 and the Medici were restored to power.

A strong campaign to remove his ceiling frescoes and accuse Michelangelo of obscenity for his naked figures ensued. The Pope defended him, but there was a law put into place To keep genitals covered.
