In order to appreciate the beauty of oil paintings, we have to explore how oil paintings are produced. Producing oil paintings using proper oil painting techniques is a highly refined skill. Not everyone is capable of producing beautiful oil paintings naturally and quickly.
The oil used on oil paintings
The paint that is usually used for oil paintings are usually made from either linseed or poppy seed oil. The whiter or paler the oil paint, the longer it will take the oil paintings to dry. Generally speaking, the oil paint used on oil paintings doesn't yellow over time as much as other types of paintings. In simple terms, the reason why oil paintings degrade less over time is because oil paints ‘dry' via oxidation. Normal paints ‘dry' via evaporation of the water contained in the paint. This creates a much more durable paint that will keep for a much longer period of time.
Oil painting requires skill and experience
Creating a masterpiece with oil paints is a very technical skill that requires some experience. When the oil paint dries, there is a small chance that when it dries, the oil paint will appear a little cracked or wrinkled. This problem is typically caused by the paint being applied to thickly on the canvas.
Oil paintings dry differently
Drying via oxidation takes a long time because even though the oil painting may appear dry on the surface (even when you touch the oil painting with your fingers) while the underlying layers of the oil painting may still be wet. It's important to use faster drying oils for the under layers of a painting to avoid lengthy wait times in between layers. Outer layers of a painting can use slower drying oils because they will have ample time to dry. It takes anywhere from 3-7 days or more for oil paintings to dry. It is possible for the outer layers to appear dry and the under layers to still be wet or tacky. It's important to make sure the painting dries completely before varnishing or using the oil painting.
The final color of the oil painting
There is a vast difference between an oil painting that uses linseed oil or poppy seed oil. When linseed oil is used to produce an oil painting, the oil painting does not change much in appearance when you compare the oil painting before and after completion. When acrylic paint color is used, the color of the paint is lighter when it is wet and darker when it is dry. The artist must know how to adjust the colors when mixing them to produce a pleasing final product.
Protection is necessary when producing oil paintings
An experienced artist will know better than to produce oil paintings in a closed-up area or low-ventilation space because of the huge amount of thinners and other forms of mediums used to produce oil paintings. For the very same reason, artist that produce oil paintings wear protective gloves, apply barrier creams and protection aprons to protect their skin and clothing.
