Surrealism - Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte

Surrealism and the Surrealists were considered the older cousin of the French Dada movement. The style was based on the use of the unconscious mind and atemptipicting the uncouscious mind through Poetry and later painting,.

A French writer, Andre Breton, helped to create the movement by writing the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924.

Some of the most famous Surrealists would be Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Frieda Kahlo and Max Ernst. There are many others as well, many consider Pablo Picasso to be a Surrealist as well his Cubist inspired visions though Abstract are they not equally as Surreal just a diffrent Subconsciouness mind being exposed. In Picasso's time with WW1 and the advances in Technology he was showing a much more fragmented world a Cubist world and Realism.

Surrealism can be characterized by figurative and abstract images that, with many surrealist works, seem to depict dream states that suggest reality, but when you look at the works, they could never represent normal reality, whatever that is.

Some great examples of this work would be how Rene Magritte would show a nighttime sky, then a daytime foreground, or Salvador Dali would melt clocks to show how unreal how time and space were.
