Velazquez

Diego Velasquez the creator of Las Meninias is a very large painting. Twelve by nine feet, The piece itself depicts a large room, included in this room, besides the painter himself is King Philip IV and his queen. They are extremely well dressed, and though the room is dark, there is a brightly lit doorway hanging just in the golden section in the painting and the family dog right in the corner for warmth.

When one looks at this piece it is as if we are transported into the room in an almost Trompe-loi like quality. It is as if Velasquez has immortalized himself, frozen throughout the ages, waiting to put the last strokes of oils down onto the same masterpiece with which he is standing in. The lighting forecast is sort of darkness lightness, ominous dark room with a brightly lit area for the aristocracy and their dog.
