Post Impressionism

Impressionism to Neo and Post Impressionism

vincent van gogh

By 1880, many members in the Impressionism movement had begun to rethink their approaches to art and to make important changes to those approaches. Many artists in the Impressionist movement were troubled by the lack of permanence in the earlier work of the impressionists. This change of focus gave rise to the neo-Impressionism movement.

Although Post-Impressionism shares many features with Impressionism, it differs in two important respects. For one thing, the elements of the painting, particularly the human figures, are defined more solidly and have a more conventional look. In addition, the composition of a Post-impressionist painting is more conservative than that found in the earlier works of the Impressionism movement.

The reform of the Impressionism movement into Post-Impressionism is generally credited to George-Pierre Seurat and the technique known as pointillism. Pointillism involved skillfully putting touches of pure color together side by side. The functions of the brain when looking at these side by side swaths of color creates an involuntary optical mixture which gives neo-Impressionism its power. Other prominent members of the Post-Impressionism movement include Vincent Van Gogh, Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, Henry Edmond Cross and Theodor van Rysselberghe.
